Organic Empowerment for 200 Youths in Lagos
200 Nigerian Youths have been recently selected to be trained on how to convert natural Organic Raw Materials to transparent Organic cosmetic end products.
This was an initiative intended to reduce skin bleaching and sensitize the nation of the dangers of bleaching as stated by the Founder Gab-Chidinma Okafor. It was initiated by Black in Beauty Foundation in Collaboration with Lagos State Government, Ministry of Youths and Social Development.
The One week Training is to take plave from November 27 to 1st of December.
Gab-Chidinma also stated that Hydroquinone, Mercury and Corticosteroids in cosmetic products have caused prevalence of hypertension, skin and liver cancers, diabetes, depression, blindness, obesity and Kidney problems.
She said: “When used by pregnant women, these products also result in stillbirths, high rates of neonatal infection and low birth weight. Given the side effects of these products, Beauty in Black Foundation through its youth empowerment scheme would train the youths on how to use organic raw materials to achieve the result of these health-damaging chemicals.
“The foundation is determined to literally and practically address this challenge through a widespread advocacy campaign and sensitization on the health hazard of skin bleaching and promote African beauty, thereby uplifting the self-esteem of black women and youths by empowering them to take active roles in their total well-being by making the right beauty choices to protect their health.
“The foundation will work with policy makers to ensure that the control of skin bleaching products is done in the interest of public safety. We will conduct trainings on how to perfect existing pure and natural resources into transparent cosmetic end products both domestically and entrepreneurially while providing opportunities and enabling platform for youths and young adults to acquire critical life skills such as, social and economic competencies to become self starters and role models through mind orientation and social entrepreneurships.”
The co-founder Gabi Okafor said that skin bleaching is the contemporary evidence of the deep-rooted and lingering psychological scars of racial ideology. He stated that it is the outcome of colonial experience that degraed the colour of the black people and imposed the aesthetic standards of the white race as the standard reference points of the beauty.
He posited that these engender a sense of lack of self-worth, dignity and confidence among the black people, adding that most black women have adopted skin bleaching as a way to influence social recognition, upgrade the status quo to achieve better life opportunities.
